The course will be taught in English.

Language Assignments and Evaluation
Students in the Master of Science in logistics program must do their exams in English, others can also use Norwegian.

Instruction
Two days of intensive lectures and group work, 6-7 times during the semester.

Evaluation
6-hour written examination

Learning outcome

The course will give students an introduction to methods and theories on scientific enquiry including the debate on academic research vs. applied, practical research. The relationship between science perspectives and selection of research methods will also be dealt with. The course will focus on basic requirements for writing a master’s thesis.

Content

The course will cover the following topics:
- Defining a research problem and designing the research
- Analyzing empirical material
- Theories on scientific enquiry and discussion of research methods
- Approaches to scientific enquiry in economics and the social sciences and the assumptions underlying these theories and methods.
