None other than the entry requirements for the MSc Logistics programme. A background in microeconomics and transport economics is recommended.

Instruction
4 hours of lectures and seminars per week. The lecturing is paused when other intensive seminars are running.

Evaluation
An essay counts 40% of final grade. The deadline for submission of the essay is May 1. A 4-hour written final examination counts 60% of the grade. The final grade is a calculated a weighted sum of the grades given, regardless of a pass / non pass in the individual grades given.

Learning outcome

The course gives an introduction to the analysis of international shipping markets and the economics of international shipping. Students will obtain a basic understanding of how different political frameworks affect shipping, and gain some experience in analysing the shipping market developments.

The essay will give students tutored training in independent analysis of a problem linked to international shipping.

Learning outcome

Students gain a thorough knowledge and understanding of the world maritime business and how shipping markets function. Through the essay students will also gain in-depth knowledge of a specific topic and also improve their analytical skills and their ability to write an analytical text.

Content

The shipping markets. Tramp trade or dry cargo spot market trading and liner conferences. Market for transport of goods in bulk and containers. Different market requirements and technical and organizational solutions. The role of different players in international shipping. Shipping law and international shipping policies. Efficiency and profitability of shipping markets. International procedures and contracts. Shipping registers, flag of convenience, classification. Shipping and the environment. Port policy, pricing and efficiency. Current international shipping problems and developments are analysed.
